Synopsis:
Understudies never get to perform

…which is why being Juliet’s understudy in the schools yearly “Evening With Shakespeare” is the perfect role for Emily. She can earn some much-needed extra credit while pursuing her main goal of spending time with Wes, aka Romeo, aka the hottest, nicest guy in school (in her complete unbiased opinion.) And she meant to learn her lines, really, it’s just:
a) Shakespeare is HARD,
b) Amanda , aka the “real” Juliet, makes her run errands instead of her lines, and
c) there’s no point because Amanda would never miss the chance to be the star of the show.

Then, Amanda ends up in the hospital and Emily, as the (completely unprepared!) understudy, has to star opposite the guy over her dreams. Oops? (source)

i really love contemporaries and they actually are my ABSOLUTE favorite genre sooo as soon as i heard about this book i thought it would be so cute and boy was i right! i was getting ready to read a long, fantasy series so i thought picking up this book for a fun, short, light hearted read would be a good idea and i was actually able to finish this book in just a few days while also reading another book!

“‘Hey, Wes,’ I squeaked.
He gave me a smile. Did I mention he had the best smile? It took over his whole face and totally lit up his eyes. And that dimple . . . there was a good chance I was going to pass out. But I had to keep talking. I knew that. ‘How was your vacation?’ I asked.” Shani Petroff (Romeo & What’s Her Name, page 4)

the main character (who is also my name twin shout out to her!) Emily is in love with the typical popular guy at school, Wes. now Wes is the kind of popular guy everyone loves and they were friends as kids and he lives down the street AND they still were friends which really surprised me!! she is weirdly a COMPLETE, utter mess around him despite the fact that they’ve known each other FOREVER (can relate though haha! i’m such a mess all the time – no shame.)

our MC of course has a mean girl, Amanda in her life who i did NOT appreciate one bit she treated Emily like an assistant gopher but, the REALLY irritating part is how Emily just lets her! i just really wished that she stood up for herself more. i actually would have never realized she was a high school junior unless it was mentioned because she does overact a bit and is a little childish but, it is sort of a cutesy book.

“I somehow found myself in the back of the room, seated at my desk, but I wasn’t quite sure how I got there. Everything seemed foggy. Did the wink he gave me earlier mean nothing? Did I only see what i wanted to see? Or was I just too late, had Amanda already made her move? Wes didn’t like me. The wink didn’t mean anything.” Shani Petroff (Romeo & What’s Her Name, page 11)

the pacing in this book was actually a bit odd but, actually surprised me because the whole play that Emily was working on for extra credit and to get closer to Wes took place in the beginning so i didn’t know what to expect with the rest of the story. i really wish we got the chance to know Wes more because he seemed like such a nice friendly guy who was super caring! something i really loved in this book was the friendships between Emily and her friends Kayla, Jill and Dhonielle they all were there for each other no matter what despite the fact that there were some events going on that definitely could’ve sparked them having a fall out.

“Kayla put her arm around me. ‘You’ll have to deal with these people sometime, and the longer you put it off, the longer you’re going to be stressing over it and trying to avoid it. Might as well get it out of the way now, when you ca have me by your side.'” Shani Petroff (Romeo & What’s Her Name, page 68)

all in all this was definitely a book that keep me smiling and laughing throughout and was 100% a book i needed at the moment before starting a long intense series. i would recommend if you want a short read, in between series or in a slump! it’ll certainly be an easy quick read! but, if your the type of person who doesn’t like if something seems a bit juvenile then this may not be for you.

happy reading,
Emily

April Haul (part two: candles & extras) ·—»

oLUeu1496287784.jpgit’s literally almost June so i couldn’t BE any later on this but! in my defensive i was sick roughly 97% of May so getting this out before June is a win for me lol! anyways im so sorry for the delay so lets just get right into this!

Bubble and Geek – Candles and more!

at the very end of march i was lucky enough to be chosen as a rep for Bubble and Geek this is my first time ever being a rep and i am BEYOND excited about it! if you’d like to make an order you can use my rep code ABA10 for 10% off a $20+ purchase! i am possibly obsessed with candles though, tbh i think it’s a family thing because i’ve always loved candles like my brother and mom so this is the best opportunity ever! i’ve purchased half of the candles/products i’m going to tell you about so not all of them were sent to me.

  1. first up my ABSOLUTE favorite candle is the ‘Eleven‘ Candle inspired by Stranger things and it smells of waffles, syrup and vanilla! i usually never like sweet scents but this smells SOOO GOOD! it’s the the perfect blend and ah i just love it!
  2. next is the ‘221b Baker Street‘ inspired by Sherlock Holmes candle and roll-on fragrance i actually bought the candle because how much i loved the roll-on!! it’s a masculine scent and sort of smells like REALLY good cologne with cedar and woodsy notes but, still has a very clean smell.
  3. then, we have ‘Summer in Stars Hollow‘ which smells SOO good! it’s a very bright, light and just fun of a scent! i only just watched Gilmore Girls last year (despite having it on my netflix list for yearsss!) and became rapidly obsessed so i’m LOVING this candle!!
  4. okay so, next is one of the newer ones i got and it’s ‘Nebula‘ inspired by Guardians of The Galaxy and i am infatuated with this one! it’s listed as containing jasmine, spices, cinnamon, and black pepper and it has such a spicy, clean scent that i could just smell forever!
  5.  i’m not that big of a tea drinker but, when i was in London i of course had to have some tea and when sampling some teas i LOVED how Earl Grey smelled like so i HAD to buy the ‘Earl Grey Tea‘ candle! it’s Earl Grey leaves mixed with bergamot and herbal notes, it smells so divine, calming and comforting i’m very excited about this candle.
  6. Lastly, ‘Newt’s Suitcase‘ from of course Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and my favorite part of this last candle is the fact that as soon as i smelled it i knew that is exactly how i’d imagine his case to smell like!! it’s a very rustic, earthy and leathery smell and it feels just right.
  7. this next product is lip balm the ‘Butterscotch Brew Lip Balm‘ to be exact and if you know me you know i’m OBSESSED with Harry Potter so this lip balm is everything and it makes your lips SOOO soft!!
  8. Finally, another lip balm i love is the ‘Coffee and Contemplation Lip Balm‘ inspired by stranger things and it smells like rich dark coffee with hints of vanilla. i really enjoy the smell of coffee so buying this was a no brainer for me!

Extras & HP goodies!

  1.  The Travel Book Rest  oh my gosh i LOVE this thing! it holds your book open for you or can even hold your iPad/tablet, it’s small and fits anywhere so it definitely came in handy on my 8 hr plane ride!!
  2. Sherlock Holmes Fragrance Warmerso now that you know my obsession with candles and fragrance products, when i went to the Sherlock Holmes Museum and i saw a fragrance warmer i HAD to get it! i also got the lemon grass oil that the whole shop smelled like to remind me of London.
  3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone paperback – since i am from america i’ve always grown up knowing it as the Sorcerer’s Stone so being in London i had to get the first book in its U.K. edition with the ‘Warner Bros Studio Tour London’ seal on it. i also got the sixth book because i have ZERO shelf control *blushes profusely*
  4. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child program and tote bag – i was lucky enough that my mom (who i went to London) with decided that she wanted to see the show (which btw Tiffany from Books Before Looks gives awesome advice on how to get last-minute tickets here.) i purchased the programs as souvenirs for the FANTASTIC show because i absolutely loved it and then ended up meeting the actor who played Scorpius (my FAVE) after the show and got his autograph i almost died!!
  5. Newt Scamander Wand  i had to get this when i went to the studios and to be honest i went a litttttlleee crazy in there haha! but, this is the first time i’ve been anywhere HP related after Fantastic Beasts came out so i hadn’t seen all the wonderful merch yet!
  6. Gryffindor scarf – from the Harry Potter shop at Platform 9 3/4. i’ve wanted an HP scarf for SOOO long but, this time it actually made sense for me to get it seeing it was pretty cold in London as oppose to the Wizarding World in sunny Florida haha!
  7. Butterbeer souvenir mug – i actually have the regular souvenir mug they carry at the Wizarding World, that i got back in 2010 but at the studios they also carried another version of the mug so i just couldn’t help myself. I also got the butterbeer ice cream in the souvenir sundae dish because it was too cute not to get!

Thank you so much for reading! lots of love,
Emily

April Haul (part one: the books) ·—»

wLb9v1494756888.jpga haul!!!! so as some of you may know i have been on a book buying ban basically ALL of 2017! *cries forever* but, i’m sort of enjoying the ban because i don’t have my tbr visually piling up, its only on my goodreads…haha! anyways! i added a bunch of new books to my ever growing tbr now so lets get into it!

Books

  1. The Checkmate Duet series by Kennedy Fox –  i was sent a copy of This is Reckless for review you can check out my review here, and as soon as i was done with that i had to buy the rest of the series and i can’t wait to read them!
  2.  Dorothy Must Die, The Wicked Will Rise and Yellow Brick War by Danielle Paige – i was SOO beyond lucky enough to win this giveaway hosted by (@readingoncloud9) on instagram for all of these books and i’m SOO excited! i actually read a sampler for Dorothy Must Die a while back and i’ve been meaning to get the series but haven’t had the chance so i’m so thankful to have won them!! thank you Karmen!
  3. Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han – so of course i preordered this book because this is one of my FAVORITE series and while i was in London i actually this book in a bookstore 2 weeks early! i was so ecstatic that i had to buy it and forfeited sleep to read it then, finished it in two days!
  4. Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – this book was actually one i was dying for because of all the positive feedback on it! so i waited till going to london to get it because i loveeee the U.K. edition especially those blue sprayed pages!
  5. Caraval by Stephanie Garber – oh gosh okay i desperately wanted the U.K. edition of this book but, i actually specifically wanted the clock edition so i didn’t want to order it online and since i knew i was going to london i HAD to search for it! on the day i met up with the wonderful Kalli from K The Ravenous Reader we had such an awesome book filled day and search high and low for these certain editions of Caraval.
  6. The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli – i am SOO excited for this book! it sounds really cute and when i saw the paperback in the U.K.  for cheaper than the hardcover would’ve been in the U.S. of course i had to pick it up!
  7. Windfall by Jennifer E. Smith – same goes for this book as well and both U.S. and U.K. editions are beautiful so i wasn’t at a loss.
  8. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger – this book oh gosh, it’s one of those rare books i read in school that i actually really enjoyed. since i read it in school i didn’t have my own copy and i’ve been wanting to reread it for a few years now so now i’m finally able to!!
  9. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – i’ve been wanting to read this book for SOO long and omg idk what london is doing but they’re THE BEST I SWEAR! literally every place i went to that had books had buy one get one half price!! which is pretty awesome so when i got the catcher in the rye i needed to get that second book lol!
  10. The Onyx Vial by Alexis Lampley   okay this book is actually so cool because it was not only self published but the cover design, illustrations and lettering was done by the author! who also runs the (Nerdy Post box) which i LOVE and this was a one-time box which can be found here.

May books (the beginning of may when i arrived back home)

     11. Alex Approximately by Jenn Bennett – this book was in my spring tbr (ehcih you can check out here if you’d like!) and since i had broken my book ban this april i decided to get it while i was off my ban because i’m SOOO thrilled about this book finally being out!!!
     12. A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas – okay so i literally haven’t even started this series yet *face palm* but, i’ve heard SUCH good things, already have the first two books and am the type of person to finish a series i start so either way i was going to get this book. then, i went to target and saw that special target edition that was ON SALE i figured may as well get it cause literally why not haha!

if you’ve read any of these books please let me know what you thought of them, if any are your favorites or if your just as excited as me to read or even reread them soon!

thank you so much and happy reading!,

Synopsis:
Drew Fisher is the type of guy everyone wants.
Noble policeman by day, charming prince by night.
He has no idea the effect he has on woman, especially me—his little sister’s best friend.

I’m the blonde Southern belle who lives up to the cliché, except I have my own quirks. I’m smart as a whip, can change my own oil, and recite The Pledge of Allegiance backward, but he doesn’t see that girl.

It’d be easier to forget him if he wasn’t my roommate and if the first thing I saw in the morning wasn’t his shirtless body covered in tattoos. I’ve crushed on him since the day we met, but he’s made it perfectly clear where we stand. Just Friends.

I know I need to move on and accept that his feelings will never be mutual, but everyday he smiles at me, I’m left dreaming of what if.

He has girl issues, and I’ve got a crush I can’t deny.
We’re friends, but I wan more

One drunken hookup leaves us with much more than a platonic friendship. Pretending it never happened proves to be more difficult than anticipated.

A crazy ex-girlfriend, a dangerous war of stolen glances, and passionate kisses leads to the most reckless battle yet. I won’t be a pawn in his game, but I’ll play by his rules if it will show him I’m the one worth breaking them for.

Checkmate, Prince Charming.

*I received this book for free from the author. This does not at all affect my opinions of the book in any way.*

honestly i was actually a bit nervous going in to this book because while i do read a bit  of NA i, unfortunately don’t read it enough but, after seeing this book ALL OVER  bookstagram for quite a while i thought i’d jump into the Kennedy Fox bandwagon and OMG how did i wait so long!! when i read the synopsis for this book i immediately knew i’d love it because i’m actually such a sucker for friends to lover romances it like my kryptonite, them being roommates was just the icing on the cake! (i actually tried to read books 1 and 2 to have more context before writing this review but, i definitely misjudged my reading speed!! *nervoulsy laughs*) there were many parts of this book that had me just smiling and giggling through out because it was, to my surprise, pretty funny!

“That’s a rhetorical question, by the way, because I know exactly what happened. Alcohol and zero inhibitions.” Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

this writing duo just amazes me! they have such a way with words that just instantly grabs you while simultaneously keeping you hooked through out and can i just say THAT CLIFF HANGER OMG!!!!!! i’m actually itching to get my hands on the next book ‘This is Effortless‘ it was SOO easy to read this book i just flew through it reading about 70% in a day, so if you’re looking for a quick, cute, funny, and steamy book look no further.

*disclaimer: contains spoilers*

Screen Shot 2017-04-15 at 4.06.25 AM.png

this review actually took me some time to write because i just couldn’t gather my thoughts!! all i could think was ‘i love this book i love this book!!’ and then i REALLY thought i’d have time to read the first two but i definitely misjudged myself *laughs maniacally* but, omg no i have the first two books ‘This is War’ and ‘This is Love’ JUST WAITING FOR ME TO DEVOUR IT!!! im SOO read to read any and everything this duo releases!!

first off i just want to say i am utterly OBSESSED with Harry Potter! okay so now that you know that and if your obsessed too just know that it is mentioned in this book… MORE THAN ONCE!! if that isn’t incentive to read this then i don’t know what your doing hahaha!! it’s actually amazing because i can just FEEL the Harry Potter love and i have QUITE the feeling the the first two books will have HP in it and i can’t wait to read them!

“Ginny is their feisty one-year-old and the coolest kid I’ve ever met. Her name was inspired by Viola’s obsession with Harry Potter, as is the name James, but I’m going to make sure they grow up knowing more than just spells and Hogwarts.” – Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

Drew ohmygosh he’s like all you want in a book boyfriend!! super hot *fans myself dramatically*, loving, funny, sweet and loyal to NO END!! while the loyalty does stress me because he’s SOO loyal to his girlfriend at the beginning of the book, Mia (i’m already rolling my eyes at her name) but, i’ll talk about her more soon! i love how he cares for his family making sure that Travis will take care of his sister Viola, it’s just another way Drew and Courtney are great together!!

“I know he’ll take care of my little sister.” Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

my ABSOLUTE favorite thing about Drew and Courtney’s relationship is the fact that they are best friends (as i stated before this is my weakness!!) they already have seen each other at their bests and worst, enjoy each others company, and are so comfortable together!! it just makes their relationship so natural and real. they have these little moments peppered throughout the beginning of this book that had me smiling so hard my cheeks hurt! with tons of little moments, staring and lingering touches (SWOON!)

“Her fingers feel cool, and it’s hard not to notice the way she lingers them against mine.” Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

Drew friend zoning Courtney had me SOOO FRUSTRATED!! actually made me want to rip my hair out because all i wanted to do was yell “omgomgomg YOU’D BE SO PERFECT WITH HER!!” at him but, had to settle with squealing into my pillow HAHA!! i did appreciate that he was loyal to his then girlfriend Mia though because it definitely says a lot to his character.

“Mia admitted to being intimidated by her looks, and while Courtney is obviously pretty, I have to constantly remind Mia that Court is one of the guys. She chugs beer like it’s going out of style, calls football plays before the referee, punches like a guy, and has no filter. Also, she can appreciate a nice ass and isn’t afraid to say so. She’s basically replaced Travis since he’s no longer living the bachelor life.” Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

i was and still kind of am a bit conflicted with whether or not i actually like Courtney *contemplating everything* she’s such a strong character who really doesn’t need anyone and can definitely take care of herself which i really love about her! but, her distrusting nature REALLY stressed me out!!! she avoids confrontation like the actual plague. the thing is she’s claims more than once that she trusts Drew so much and would never believe that he would do these certain things to her (which i of course agree with seeing that he’s SO loyal!) but, at any point in which a confrontation is present she runs away and is gone saying how she can’t believe he would do that to her, ALREADY thinking about how she’s going to move out!! i just wanted her to realize how awesome she is and JUST how much Drew LOVES her!!

“’I’ve never fallen for someone so hard, Courtney. As much as I didn’t see it at first, I’m seeing and feeling everything now. It’s consuming me.’” – Drew, Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

now Mia OH GOSH! this girl was actually the kind of crazy you only see in movies! she definitely added a bit of comedy (i did NOT expect and really loved!) to this book. she was like THE perfect antagonist you just wanted to hate her so much it actually made me laugh i was so invested into these characters!! some of the things she would say to either Drew or Courtney had me literally rolling my eyes out of my head, she was so delusional while every time Courtney mocked her i just about died of laughter HAHA!! she made you realize how perfect Court and Drew would be together (and let me just say when Drew finally realized how much of a hot mess his relationship with Mia was i HONESTLY sighed and relaxed at the thought he wouldn’t be SO hung up on her!!) plus the fact that the i sexual tension was so present, evident and utterly palpable that LITERALLY EVERYONE even LOGAN (who i absolutely LOVED!!!) noticed it!! when Drew had that dream about Courtney i turned into immediate Drew/Courtney Trash omg!

“Between the argument with Mia and that hot sex dream of my best friend, I’ve successfully avoided Courtney like the plague for a week.” Kennedy Fox (This is Reckless)

When Drew and Courtney FINALLY get together all i could think is oh no, oh no, oh no! because of them being drunk and Court getting out of bed in the morning i JUST knew he would *pretend* to forget them sleeping together! (and thank GOODNESS he was pretending because i would have been so distressed! i’m glad they were able to be toghether before the SURPRISE CURVEBALL Kennedy Fox threw at us with Drew being held at gunpoint! i just CANNOT WAIT to go back home (because i’m currently on vacation) and devour the second book ‘This is Effortless’ because that cliffhanger had me SO shook i almost fell out of my chair!!!!! but, until then i will be reading books 1 & 2 that’s are patiently waiting in my phone to be read!

sincerely Kennedy Foxs newest fangirl,
Emily

Spring TBR ·—»

3md521491273226so now that it’s finally starting to feel like spring where i live. i thought it was finally time to share a few reads i plan to get through this spring. i recently reorganized my book shelf so that all of my tbr is in front (it’s double wide) and basically all my unread books stare back at me when i look at my shelf haha! one of my favorite genres is contemporary and i feel like spring (and summer) are the perfect times to really get into some of those! (the only order these are in is owned, series then, unreleased.)

i’m really hoping to read a ton this year and really just try to make a MASSIVE dent into my owned tbr. i have so many books that i own that i still haven’t read and i honestly can’t wait to read them all. my new years resolution for this year was to be on a book buying ban. this idea was solely until i was able to at least make a considerable lesser tbr owned tbr size but, there was SO many great new releases and i had quite a few preorders so i started my book ban with a little bit of a late start in the year *hides in shame* i’m now hoping to stick to my word and it’s been going pretty well so i’ll try to keep this to books i own but a few new releases miiiiight sneak in here. (you can click the title of the books for a goodreads link to their descriptions)

i’d say to know why you’re doing this not to do it because you feel like you have to or because everyone else has one but because YOU love it. also try always remember that you’re doing this for fun! it’s not a job so don’t feel obligated to post ALL the time if you don’t have time to post this week or this month that’s okay!!

2. What genre of books do you enjoy most?

i absolutely LOVE me a good contemporary (and that’s not saying i don’t love other genres though i mostly go for YA or NA) but something about a cute contemporary just gets me! *swoon* they make me feel all warm and giddy inside and they always put a smile on my face.

3. What is that one book that made you reflect for a long time?

i typically never reflect off books but, one that always comes to mind is ‘Second Chance Summer’ by Morgan Matson. without trying to give anything away the main characters family gets some devastating news and instead of being the busy flurry of Hi’s and Bye’s they usually are with their overtasked schedule they spend of summer having family time. this book always makes me think about how important it is to appreciate your family, friends and the people around you because you just never know.

4. What has been the most rewarding part about having a book blog?

the most rewarding part of having a book blog is also the most rewarding part of being in the book community. that is just being here no matter if i’m having a wonderful day or an absolutely horrible day it never fails to make me smile i love this so much. also, the reason i started this book blog is so i could have a platform where writing significantly more than it is acceptable on instagram is an okay thing to do and that has been fantastic.

5. If possible, which fictional world would you take up permanent residence?

100000% the wizarding world!!! if any of you know me from instagram (@abookishadventurer if you’re wondering!)  you know i am obsessed with Harry Potter! there’s no other world i’d want to live in more!

6. What is that one book / series that really got you into reading?

okay so i started reading at the ripe young age of 1½ to 2 years old so i never really know what to say for this question but, i do remember having a subscription Nick Jr. magazines as a kid. back to the question the oldest book i remember reading (and oldest on my shelf right now) is ‘Charlottes Web’ by E.B. White from when i was 7 years old (it has the date in it!) for series though oh my gosh i remember vividly going to the library to get ‘The Adventurers of Mary-Kate and Ashley Series‘!!! i probably read all those series they had when i was younger!

7. Is there a book that you think everyone in the world should read and why?

this is a hard question!!! it honestly comes down to opinion but i do think everyone should read ‘Harry Potter’ of course by J.K. Rowling no matter what age you are it’s still magical and ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by J.D. Salinger is such a good book i’d definitely recommend it (its also on the banned books list.)

8. Favorite reading time and snacks?

i’m usually reading at night (i definitely sacrifice sleep more of than not to read. whoops!) and as for snacks i really don’t ever snack while reading but, i do drink water, coffee, hot cocoa or sometimes tea.

9. Who are your top 5 OTPs?

WHO DON’T I SHIP?!? that would be the real question *laughs maniacally* okay. this is hard.. who do i choose!?
1. Kaz and Inej – oh my how i love these two (fyi if you didnt know im also helplessly obsessed with Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom(review) by Leigh Bardugo she is my queen!) and let me point out i ship the other couples in this duology as well!
2. Katniss and Peeta – ha the shipping wars when this film came out and i was just there in the background shipping these two like none other! i’ll always love them. (‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins)
3. Lara Jean and Peter – i cannot wait for the final book in this trilogy to come out to see what happens with these two! (‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ by Jenny Han)
4. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase – thESE TWO! i’m currently still reading this series but, aw omg they’re so cute and pure i love them! (‘Percy Jackson’ by Rick Riordan)
5. Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein – i loved these two SOO much this movie was absolutely amazing i wish there was more of them!  (‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay’ by J.K. Rowling)

10. Finally, what are some of your favorite quotes?

i have a whole bunch of book quotes i love but here are a few quotes relating to books that i love. a couple of these i have no idea where they’re from but, i love them nonetheless.
1. “If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story” – Orson Welles
2. “You like a good story, then start at the beginning”
3. “All of these books have one thing in common, they start on page one and each pages you turn brings you deeper into the story.”
4. “A room without books is like a body without a soul” – Marcus Tullius Cicero
5. “So many books, So little time” – Frank Zappa

Their city is crumbling.

Kate and August are the only two who see both sides, the only two who could do something.

But how do you decide to be a hero or a villain when its hard to tell which is which?

(source)

This Savage Song has been a book i’ve been dying to read since i received it back in July! the timing was never right BUT, i’m beyond ecstatic i finally got around to reading this book because it has jumped to near the top of my favorites list! August Flynn is of course on my book boyfriend list (let’s be honest who isn’t!) but, seriously he’s honestly THE SWEETEST!, so adorable, dark hair, kind eyes… DIMPLES honestly i was so shook from the beginning (*swoon*) plus shy guys are actually the best i’m so weak (*nervous laugh*).

haha! now enough of me going on and on about August i just want to say that even though this is my first ever Victoria Schwab book (*i knowww! i’m ashamed*) i’m officially obsessed with her writing!!! this book is written in such a beautifully captivating way it made me think there’s NO way i couldn’t loveee this book.

“He didn’t remember what happened next.Or rather, he did but it was a set of photos, not a film, stills without the space between. He was holding the violin, running a thumb over the strings. There was light. There was darkness. There was music. There was peace.” Victoria Schwab (This Savage Song, page 105)

the world in This Savage Song was honestly a bit hard to get into in the beginning because the world seems a bit complex and enigmatic at first but, once you delve into it the story becomes so easy to understand. it really just drew me in from the since the story is such an interesting one, my favorite part of this book besides the writing is the fact that there is no unnecessary romance storylines.

this story isn’t just the average good versus evil where humans are depicted as good while monsters are evil, the lines between a persons morality blur and it becomes humans vs. monster, monsters vs. monsters and finally humans vs. humans. i love how this book also being a first book in this duology, the second Our Dark Duet (which comes out in MID-JUNE!? *anxiously awaiting it release!*) all the characters aren’t thrown in our face. we gradually learn about the characters and have potential to learn more in the sequel then, we also receive tons of insight in our main characters, August Flynn and Kate Harker but there is still tons to learn more about … which makes me anticipate the sequel EVEN MORE.

“In an auditorium full of stares, his was the gaze she felt. In a classroom full of students learning lies, he scribbled the truth in the margins. In a school that clung to the illusion of safety, he didn’t shy from talk of violence. He didn’t belong there, the way she didn’t belong there, and that shared strangeness made her feel like she knew him.
But she didn’t.
Not yet.” Victoria Schwab (This Savage Song, page 146)

i’d recommend this book to you even if you aren’t into fantasy/dystopian-ish types of book just so you can relish in Schwabs amazing writing.

*disclaimer: contains spoilers*

the character development in this story was most important to me because i actually realllyyy did not like Kate to begin with and while she’s still not my favorite she definitely grows on you! she sort of changes from this girl who walks around the halls of (many) different schools as if she owns the world to someone who finally learns that the world isn’t so black and white. you can’t trust family just because they’re family and clearly monsters aren’t the only people to be afraid of in Verity. she tries SOOO hard to be her father it’s actually so annoying, because she clearly is scared to be him but, does all she can to be only to turn into a version of him she can never change.

“‘Why would you even want to be human? We’re fragile. We die.'” Victoria Schwab as Kate Harker (This Savage Song, page 271)

now i know i said enough about August but i just love him so muchhhh! there’s something so insanely human about August despite him being a monster. he wants nothing more than to be a human though he obviously can’t be but, he still tries his hardest to stay as moral and untainted as possible and wants to live as normally as he can. he’s so precious i  just wished he could have everything he wanted and more because all he wants is the smallest things in life to make him happy. he’s too pure for us! (*screaming through my tears*)

“‘Where are you?’
August closed his eyes, took a long breath. ‘Lying on my bed,’ he whispered. ‘Listening to music while my cat chews on the corner of a book.'” Victoria Schwab (This Savage Song, page 351)

Kate and August have almost immediate chemistry it made me wayy too excited to see how the story played out being on the run from none other than (*SPOILER ALERT*) the darn Harker pet himself, Sloan which to be completely honest i actually kinda liked him in the throughout the book because he toyed with Kate so much (*shrugs*) whoops. BUT, once he started going after baby August he lost ALL my respect! the ENDING… oh my gosh! how did i know that Leo was going to end up betraying the Flynn’s who by the way, were SOO welcoming to him it actually boils my blood ahhh! the ONLY useful thing he did was sort of save August from Sloan but, even then was he still able to ruin everything causing August to lose all his tallies.

“He was getting to his feet, darkness wicking off his shoulders like steam.
And then, between one moment and the next, he changed.
His face went smooth, and all the tension vanished from his mouth and eyes, the weight falling from his shoulder. His head tipped forward, the black curls swallowing his face as shadows rolled across his skin. . . . Where there had been a boy, now there was a monster. Tall, and graceful, and terrifying.” Victoria Schwab (This Savage Song, page 396)

my love for this book burns as bright as when a Sunai falls, this is my first Victoria Schwab book but, i can guarantee i’ll be picking up more from her later this year.. starting with the shades of magic trilogy! i cannot wait to be able to read those books!

love from Victoria Schwabs newest fangirl,

Unboxing Wonder Girl Box

Screen Shot 2017-02-27 at 9.29.36 PM.png

i was lucky enough to be able to snag the last, first-ever Wonder Girl Box and i’m so happy i did so! this monthly book box company is brand new and run the lovely girls, Karlynn (@wondergirlreads) and Alley (@alleyparton) from (@wondergirlbox) who by the way, were so extremely nice and caring when it came to customer support! the ABSOLUTELY amazing thing about this box is that each box gives back. Wonder Girl Box works with incredible organizations that helps empower girls through education and become leaders of change!

the theme of the February box was ‘I Love Me’ and it was centered around self acceptance and loving & caring for yourself. they also partnered with CAMFED this month, an organization which supports woman AND girls in less fortunate areas of sub-Saharan Africa to give the means to become leaders of change in and out of their communities.

this first-ever Wonder Girl Box had a list of goodies plus a young adult book including:

  • a ‘Don’t Forget to Love Yourself’ print which i love and it is going up on my wall immediately so i can remind myself this everyday!
  • a lollipop with a cute message, mine said you are amazing and made me smile.
  • a pair of classic lit ‘Thou Art the Bomb’ from Blue Q oh my do i love these! they’re super cute, soft and i can’t wait to use them for #socksunday
  • a ‘Self Care Index’ from Free Period Press  which is a pocket guide for keeping track of all your favorites! a great pick me up to look at if your ever just not feeling it.img_5773-1
  • 6 handmade soy blend wax melts from Pearl Rose Candle Co. and it is hands down my absolute FAVORITE goodie in this box they’re so beautiful and they smell sooo good! the scent is called ‘Love Dust’ and contains raw honey, cocoa butter and chocolate. i CANNOT wait to put these in my wax warmer and just be engulfed in this wonderful scent!
  • last but, not least is… the book! this months book was ‘A Tragic Kind of Wonderful’ by Eric Lindstrom. i hadn’t heard of this book before but once i read the synopsis (continue below for book info) i got really keen to read it! it sounds like such a wonderful (pun indeed intended) book with topics not often explored in YA books.

REVIEW ·—» Melody’s Key by Dallas Coryell (Spoiler Free)

Synopsis:
“His eyes settled on her… piercing green embers of flame that revealed the ferocity of his pain and passion, yet still shrouded him under veils of ever-deepening mystery that made every ounce of her ache to unravel him.”

Tegan Lockwood’s dreams were dead, sacrificed on the noble altar of duty before they ever had a chance to live. Her entire existence was disappearing into the abyss of apathy as she labored her days away keeping her family’s struggling business alive. There would be no emotion, no color, no beauty in her life. That is, until a mysterious visitor begins to draw her out of the darkness of her past towards something that will challenge the boundaries of her world, and unlock the most deeply held secrets of her heart. (source)

Melody’s Key follows Tegan Lockwood, a hard-working and talented (in painting, writing songs, singing, playing piano AND guitar) young adult who is working at her family business, a mix between a B&B and an Inn in England—that is struggling to stay afloat with her families financial troubles. the family dynamics in this story was my FAVORITE! i especially enjoyed the fact that all the kids (varying in ages between adulthood and teenage status) weren’t rude or constantly brawling with their parents. their family was so, so, SO close, maybe a little too close at times sharing intimate details about their lives and are very blunt with each other but, still got along swimmingly and it was refreshing they make you feel like your apart other family too. Tegan’s younger sister, Ryleigh and her have a great bond and tell each other almost everything which was a really nice thing to read.

“Tegan hand went instinctively to the key around her neck. For some reason it always made her feel better. It was a tangible connection to her safe place—a symbolic representation of love, faith and everything she hoped was in store for her someday.” Dallas Coryell (Melody’s Key, page 73)

Tegan constantly reads these love letters she found in the attic of her home shared between her great-grandmother, Violet and her soul mate, Jonathon and it makes her a bit naive with love because she saw a love like theirs.

i really loved that while this story was slightly cliché (but, you guys know i love me some clichés!) it didn’t consist of her chasing after a bad boy rock star. Mason Keane is an American pop star who does have a bit of a bad reputation because its helps promote his image who, is at her family’s estate for the summer to get away from everyone and everything to weigh his options with his record label for the end of the year. i was really happy that you see very early on he isn’t any of the things Tegan assumes of him (which was something i didn’t like about her — she’s stubborn and is pretty judgmental or quick to judge comparing him to others) and she doesn’t chase after him or vise versa they just gradually fall into their friendship.

“Tegan had plenty of experience with Mason’s type; money, entitlement, ego and narcissism where only the appetizers.” Dallas Coryell (Melody’s Key, page 42)

i think my favorite thing about this book is actually the writing i think the author wrote very beautiful and was able to describe scenarios amazingly. also, Dallas is so talented and actually wrote all the songs that are featured in the book himself and i thought that was an amazing feature. the story has a way of sucking you into this world Tegan lives in and you get to experience this pure, consuming and amazing relation she falls into with a some unexpected scenes here and there.

“Tegan had always been a night-owl, preferring the stillness of the dark to the chaos of the day. There was something intoxicating and inspiring about the middle of the night, when the world was wrapped in slumber.” Dallas Coryell (Melody’s Key, page 6)

one thing about Melody’s Key is while i did enjoy it i feel like there were parts of the story that was never touched on again and left a bit unresolved. such as, how Tegan has a dark secret from her past but, it was sort of skirted around and not fully explained then, her best friend Simon i feel had more to his story to tell that i wonder about.

i mostly read young adult books and this was more on the new adult side and i’m so glad i had to opportunity to read this book. it was definitely one i enjoyed very much and would recommend! melody’s key helped me with a slump that i was going through for way longer than i wanted to and is for sure a story that i would pick up again in the summer for a cute, romantic read.

with love,
Emily
